Our sustainability journey | at a glance

We are proud to be a member of the Coca-Cola HBC Group, a global industry leader in sustainability. Coca-Cola HBC has leading scores and rankings in ten of the most-recognised ESG ratings.

We were ranked as the world’s most sustainable beverage company in the 2024 Dow Jones Best-in-Class Indices for the eighth time. We believe our success comes from continuously evolving our business model to deliver growth and taking a strategic approach to sustainability. This approach allows us to both grow and make our business more resilient.

Coca-Cola HBC’s sustainability journey so far:

  • 2006: Set our first carbon reduction commitments.

  • 2010: We formally established a clear sustainability strategy.

  • 2016: We were among the first companies to adopt Science-Based targets for climate.

  • 2018: We published Mission 2025. This is our clear and ambitious sustainability strategy that focuses on the following areas: climate, packaging, water, ingredients, nutrition and people and communities.

  • 2021: We announced our commitment to reach NetZeroBy40 across our entire value chain by 2040.

  • 2022: We announced our net positive biodiversity commitment, making us one of the first companies to do this.

  • 2023: We integrated Egypt into our sustainability strategy – after we acquired the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Egypt in 2022 – and developed specific plans for the market.

  • 2023: We established the Coca-Cola HBC Foundation.

  • 2025: The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved our NetZeroby40 target, which, for the first time, includes Egypt.

  • 2025: We published our first Sustainability Statement as part of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requirements.

Our sustainability strategy focuses on seven major areas: climate, packaging, water, ingredients, nutrition, people and communities, and biodiversity. It is underpinned by a set of external commitments known as Mission 2025, further amplified by commitments to achieve a Net Zero carbon footprint by 2040 and net positive biodiversity by 2040.

Climate & Energy

We have decreased our absolute direct emissions by 58,9% and reduced our absolute scope 3 emissions by 23,3% from 2010 to 2023, despite a global increase.

In 2023, our core initiatives to reduce carbon emissions included:

KLIMA 776 x 664 KLIMA 776 x 664

  • Implementation of the Group’s Top 20 Energy Savers Programme across all our plants.
  • Identification, reporting and repair of closed-loop losses.

  • Replacement of 80% of factory lighting with LED lamps and motion sensors across all our facilities.
  • 100% replacement of LPG forklifts with electric ones*.

  • Emission control measurements (e.g., soot, carbon monoxide) in all units.

  • Where feasible, we use more environmentally friendly, low-emission energy sources – for example, at the Schimatari Mega-Plant, we use natural gas.

  • 40% of our coolers are energy efficient.

*During periods of increased production demand, some LPG forklifts are still used.

PACKAGING: Towards a circular economy

Our objective is to create packaging for our drinks that can be recycled or reused, so that it can be collected and transformed into new recycled packaging, such as an rPET bottle. This circular packaging approach reduces our carbon emissions and helps to lower packaging waste in the environment. We are making progress towards this by:

  • increasing recycled content with a focus on our primary packaging

  • use of rPET in our products

  • expanding reusable formats such as reusable glass bottles

  • supporting effective collection models in our markets, including Deposit Return Schemes in Europe and our collaboration with the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (EEAA S.A.), which operates a Collective Alternative Management System for the recovery and utilization of post-consumer packaging materials.

People & Communities

We focus on making a positive impact in different ways in the local communities where we operate, such as through financial support, volunteering and training for young people.

  • Through the Youth Empowered program, we have trained over 50,000 young people in skills that are in demand in today’s job market.

  • We implement the HoReCa Empowered program, training young HoReCa professionals in modern trends and techniques in mixability, spirits, and coffee, helping them enhance their knowledge and skills, build networks, and shape a successful career in the HoReCa sector.

  • We support the local communities where we operate and respond immediately to urgent needs. The Coca-Cola HBC Foundation, responding to the devastating wildfires that struck Greece this summer, announced a €1 million donation to help restore the affected areasΣχήμα

Water

Water is a key ingredient in our products and a precious resource under threat from the climate crisis. Our goal is to reduce its use and ensure its safe return to the environment.

  • We regularly monitor the quantity and quality of water supply at all our bottling plants.

  • We significantly improve our efficiency and water performance, continuously investing in emerging technologies that promote responsible use and reduce consumption in our production processes. In our plants, we reduced water consumption from 1.61 l/lpb* in 2022 to 1.50 l/lpb* in 2023 and reused or recycled 62,968,000 liters of water.

  • We assess future water availability and mitigate environmental and social risks associated with the water resources we use.

  • We are committed to returning to local communities the water we use to produce our products. For this reason, for the past 19 years, we have been implementing water conservation and protection programs in Greece.
